Research and QI
The Children’s Foundation Research Institute (CFRI) provides comprehensive basic and clinical research infrastructure to support all research activities at Le Bonheur, including clinical trial support, provision of lab space, safety assistance, grant submission, budgeting services, scientific editing and statistical assistance. The CFRI operates in a 300,000-square-foot Research Center dedicated to basic, translational and clinical research. The centralized support of the CFRI is available to all of Le Bonheur’s Pediatric Residents, with the goal of accelerating their scientific discovery and innovation.
Recent research from Le Bonheur includes major breakthroughs in many areas, including the treatment of respiratory syncytial virus in infants; sepsis; kidney tumors in patients with Tuberous Sclerosis; life-threatening cardiomyopathies; liver and GI disease, including intestinal failure; pediatric neurological disorders, including complex seizures, brain tumors, headache and stroke.
Residents are welcome and encouraged to be involved in research with any of the various projects underway or to generate original research ideas. Research can be completed at Le Bonheur or with St. Jude. All residents are required to participate in at least one scholarly activity prior to graduating. Many of our residents have presented their research at various conferences nationally and internationally!
Safe Sleep Initiatives
This project started with many physicians observing unsafe sleep practices in our hospital. Baseline data on safe sleep practices in our clinic were obtained, with results showing that safe infant sleep guidelines were not being routinely followed with every sleep. A working committee was formed to address gaps in safe infant sleep in our hospital and our community. We are creating a safe infant sleep policy for non-birthing children’s hospitals, developing educational materials, and working on legislative activities surrounding safe infant sleep promotion.
Firearm Safety Initiatives
Currently, Memphis has one of the highest rates of childhood firearm injuries in the country. Our residents have implemented an intervention to assess gun safety practices in the home, provide appropriate education, provide gun locks, and to perform follow up surveys to assess changes in storage practices. This is part of a larger gun safety initiative that the hospital and community at large is conducting.
Education has been provided to residents on the Be SMART initiative through our Community Pediatrics rotation and Advocacy Conferences. This framework is designed to help parents and adults normalize conversations about gun safety and take responsible actions that can prevent child gun deaths and injuries.

Etteldorf Symposium: Practice Based Pediatrics Conference
The Etteldorf is an annual seminar hosted at LeBonheur and designed to encompass state-of-the-art practices and trends in treating pediatric conditions. Clinically and academically oriented faculty address relevant issues and provide valuable information and insight into situations commonly presented to subspecialists and primary care providers. Residents are always encouraged to attend, and to present their research at the Research Poster session as well!
Other conferences residents frequently present at include Pediatric Academic Societies, Southern Regional Meeting, TNAAP, and subspecialty conferences such as the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology.
