IPPE & APPE

Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPE)

The IPPE program introduces students to the pharmacy profession and the role of the pharmacist in caring for patients. The IPPE program begins in the P1 year and ends in the Fall of the P3 year. Students gain approximately 300 hours learning about the practice of pharmacy in the community and institutional settings, as well as caring for patients in a clinical, interprofessional setting.

Pharmacy Years

P1 - Year 1

P1 students are paired with a P2 or P3 student in a patient care setting. In a layered-learning setting, P1 students perform a patient medication review and present and participate in discussion of patient cases.

In the summer between the P1 and P2 years, students complete a 2 week, 80 hour rotation in a community pharmacy setting to learn about managing a community practice and the administrative and patient care role of a community pharmacist.

P2 - Year 2

Over the Spring P2 semester, P2 students will be assigned five actual patients to complete comprehensive patient care plan using the pharmacist patient care process. In a layered-learning setting, P2 students will present the patient case and plan to demonstrate application of knowledge and skills in caring for complex patient cases.

In the summer between the P2 and P3 years, students complete a 2 week, 80 hour rotation in a health-system, institutional pharmacy setting to learn about the administrative and patient care role of a hospital or heath-system pharmacist.

P3 - Year 3

In the Fall P3 semester, P3 students will continue to refine and hone their knowledge and skill application to patient cases in a clinical setting. P3 students will be assigned patient cases to complete a comprehensive, evidence-based patient care plan using the pharmacist patient care process. In a layered-learning setting, P3 students will present the patient case and plan to demonstrate application of knowledge and skills in caring for complex patient cases, as well as practice documentation of the patient case encounter.

Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPE)

Students begin APPEs in their P3 year of the program. The APPE program comprises almost 30% of the curriculum and provides opportunities for students to practice in some of the top health care facilities across the state of Tennessee. Students have the opportunity to explore various pharmacy settings, career paths and work alongside experts in theirÌýpharmacy/healthcare field.Ìý

Students will complete a total of 10Ìýrotations for 1760 hours of pharmacy practice experience:

4 Required rotations – Ambulatory Care, Medicine, Advanced Community, and Advanced Institutional APPEs

+

At least 7 patient care (PC) rotations – Includes REQUIRED Ambulatory Care, Medicine, and Advanced Community APPEs plus at least 4 elective patient care APPEs

+

A maximum of 2Ìýother professional experience (OPE) rotations – includes REQUIRED Advanced Institutional plus 3 elective OPE APPEs

Patient care (PC) rotations involve direct patient care in a variety of practice settings. Students will work to improve health outcomes and promote safe and effective medication use with individual patients. Example APPEs include: Critical Care/Emergency Medicine, Pediatrics, Cardiology, Infectious Disease, and Mental Health.

Other professional experience (OPE) rotations involve non-patient care rotations in a variety of practice settings. Students indirectly improve health outcomes and improve patient experiences. Example APPEs include: Compounding, Pharmacy Management, Medical Information, Academia, Research, and Informatics.

Outside of Tennessee APPEs

International APPEs

Students may request to complete APPEs outside of the state of Tennessee. The types of rotations vary and may be a Patient Care or Other Professional Experience APPEs.

Example practice sites for APPEs outside of Tennessee include military bases, Indian Health Services, veterinary pharmacy practice, pharmaceutical companies, Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Select students have the opportunity to complete their advanced pharmacy practice rotations (APPEs) in another country caring, for patients from various cultures. Students can apply to complete a rotation in a variety of international practice settings.

Example locations include Canada, Ireland, Sweden, Spain, Hungary, Japan, and Thailand.
